James Hamel married Sarah Rodella Gilmore on 25 Aug 1864 in Lorain Co., OH.

He died under mysterious circumstances after having been found drowned in One Mile Creek near the crossing of the Mobile and Ohio Railroad in Mobile, Alabama.

James had been buried in an unmarked grave since his death in 1889. In July 2007, some of his descendants held a full military burial for James and a proper tombstone was then placed on his grave.
