Sofie, a resident of Fairview, passed away following a short illness. She was predeceased by her parents Eduardo and Adeliria Giron; brother Eduardo Giron Jr; sister Connie Palacio; nieces Diana Rodriguez, Antoinette Garcia; nephew, Alex Giron; son-in-law Luis Bustos; father and mother-in-law Guillermo and Antonio Gurule; father and mother-in-law who adopted her husband, Abel, Antonio and Talpita Valdez.
Sofie is survived by her husband, Juan Abel Valdez of Fairview; children, Sylvia Bustos and companion, James Salazar of El Guache, Lori Garcia and husband, Paul of La Mesilla, Karl Valdez and wife, Christine of Espanola, Abel Valdez Jr. of Albuquerque and Rodney Maestas of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Gerrie Coriz and husband, Gerard, Luis Bustos Jr. and companion, Melissa Rodriguez, Camille Bustos, Marissa Bustos, Mikayla and Kayanna Garcia, Nikki Valdez, Isaiah Valdez and Rudy Casias; great-grandchildren, Luis Bustos III, Faith Rodriguez and Arianna Salazar; brothers and sisters, Dora Mitchell and husband, George, Martha Brown and husband, Les, Julia Garcia and husband, Tony, Paul Giron and Margaret Giron, Ernie Giron and wife, Lori; sister-in-law, Claudia Giron; brother-in-law, Arthur Palacio; half sister, Marie Giron; special friends, Lynn Todd-Martin; Jenny Vigil and numerous other relatives and friends.
Sofie was a member of La Sociedad de Hermanas Unidas and was a foster grandmother for Journey's Inc. Sofie was a bookkeeper and previously worked for Best Heating for 20 years. Sofie and Abel were willing to do La Marchas at weddings. She was a great wife, mom and grandma who will be greatly missed.
Visitation and devotional service were on 9 March 2006 at Valley View United Methodist Church in Española. Funeral services were 10 March 2006 also at Valley View United Methodist Church in Española. Burial followed at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Pallbearers were Gerri Coriz, Gerard Coriz, Luis Bustos Jr., Camille Bustos, Marissa Bustos, Nikki Valdez, Isaiah Valdez, Mikayla Garcia, Kayanna Garcia, and Rudy Casias.
