Samuel was the oldest of 10 children of Alexander Behanna & Sarah Jane Williams Behanna. Samuel served in the 22nd Pa Calvary during the Civil War with his father Alex, his brother John and his brother James. The 1880 census shows Samuel living in Rostraver Township with wife Martha Bowden Behanna and four young children, working as a coal miner. He and Martha went on to have a total of eleven children.
