Arlie Everett "Poppy", 79, died at 6:21 a.m. at Morgan County Memorial Hospital, Martinsville, IN.
The son of Cornelius and Vanga (Vangie Tucker) New. He was born in Wayne County Kentucky. He married Mary Margaret Black on September 10, 1939. He had been a mechanic at American Aggregates Gravel Co. in Indianapolis, IN. Later he opened his own business called New's Lawn & Garden shop on Morton Ave in Martinsville, IN. He and his wife Mary became successful business owners selling Snapper mowers & Styiel chainsaws & kept the business in the family. They hired their daughter Linda for parts/sales & grandson Mike Arnold as a mechanic. They were well-liked in the community. In the early,80s he was able to purchase an RV/motor home for traveling & paid $23,000.00 cash for it from their savings. I remember helping them count the money & it smelled so musty from being stored in a safety box tucked away in a closet. He retired in 1987 from having a stroke. He was a big teddy bear with a big kind heart. He and Mary bought a house at 1620 South Harriet St in Martinsville. Poppy was a hard-working man who loved to joke and play pranks. He loved unusual toys so he was a kid at heart. He would always take all the grandchildren shopping at Christmas time and would give us 100.00 each to spend. We loved it & he loved watching us spend it on everyone a Christmas gift that became a family traditkion. He called us 3 granddaughters Arlie's Angels and had made 3 red T-shirts saying that on them. (Teresa Sample, Tina Sample, and Kim Arnold) He would roll up each of us ten-dollar bills into a small ball & sneak it to us girls to spend until we were 21 years old. I believe he even carried that tradition on with some of the grandchildren. He always hid it from Grandma. He has a son Richard Arlen (Ronna) who lives in Arizona Brenda Arlene (Cam) Arnold of Martinsville and Linda Jean (Darrell)Sample of Martinsville. Five sisters Clida Keith of Gosport, Charlotte Turner of
San Bernardino, CA Geneva Clark of Puyallup, Washington, and Ola Mary Stevens and Naomi Baker of Martinsville: 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was the Best grandpa anyone could ask for.
Three brothers Albert (never married) and Robert "Bob" (Barbara) New of Martinsville and an infant brother and two sisters Desde Frye and an infant preceded him in death.
His service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Apostolic Faith Church on W. Highland St. The Revs. Patricia Cook and Perry Quakenbush will officiate. Burial will be in New South Park Cemetery on Poston Road Martinsville, IN.
Friends may call from 3 to 9 pm Sunday at Costin Funeral Chapel on E. Washington St. One hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.

The poem was written by Jessica McKinney 8 years old. (One of his Great granddaughters) This was read at the funeral and it was a tear-jerker!! POPPY Poppy was sweet and Poppy was neat he was the type of guy anyone would love to meet
He was caring and funny like a big Easter Bunny
He was always there through good times and bad. And now that he's gone everyone's sad. He was smart and brave but now they're digging his grave.
I wish he was still here with me I miss him so dearly
His hands were big his hair was white he didn't go to bed till late at night
He owned his own shop and he'd work till he dropped
He retired in 1987 but now he's in heaven
He always worked hard and was always the best But now I guess its his turn to rest
May he rest in peace!!!! Love Jessica McKinney
