Mary (New) Stevens, 93, of Monrovia and formerly of Martinsville, passed from this life on Easter Sunday, April 12, 2020, while under hospice care, in the comfort of her daughter, Beverly Hurt's home. She was born on August 27, 1926, in Paoli, to the late Cornelius “C.R” and Vanga (Tucker) New.

One of ten children belonging to the New family, Mary attended Stinesville High School. She was an independently strong, detailed orientated and tenacious woman. Finding purpose and passion in nurturing all plants, animals and people, Mary was the blessed mother of three children and raised her grandson, Josh. A green-thumbed, muscle-car loving, voracious reader, meticulous writer and multi-sports fanatic, she liked to watch college basketball, NFL, golf and follow the NASCAR and IndyCar racing series. Mary was skilled at, and loved to play Euchre, you didn’t dare renege in her presence! In addition, she liked to paint and wallpaper, tend to and can from her gardens and feed the hummingbirds, finches and cardinals year-round. Excelling in all avenues, Mary’s attention to detail and organizational skills landed her longstanding employments in Martinsville at Dr. Eisenberg’s office and Motor Express in Indianapolis where she specialized in dispatching and served as the executive secretary for the President. Mary found true love later in life with Raymond “Cat” Stevens; to whom she settled into Martinsville with and shared responsibilities with raising the kids. A past officer of the Martinsville Moose Lodge, Mary and Cat were active members and frequent visitors at the Martinsville American Legion. Bold, brave and beautiful, she was an excellent cook, thorough hostess and straightforward character. With tactful class, she kept everyone in line. Persevering in sickness, her iron-will was undefeatable. Courageously surviving bladder cancer four years ago, Mary tirelessly remained active and driving up until the ripe age of 93. Taking refuge in her daughter, Beverly’s home, she was freed of all earthly ailments after six months of hospice care and called home to be with the Lord while surrounded by loved ones on Easter Sunday. Mary was a realist with an intrinsic ambition, she vivaciously lived to the fullest degree and will be greatly missed by her loving family.

Along with her parents and spouse, Mary was preceded in death by her siblings, Jane Frye, Clida Keith, Arlie New, Chloe New, Albert New, Charlotte Meadows and Robert New; along with her granddaughter, Stephanie Parker, son-in-law, Denzil Hurt, canine fur babies Eddie the Yorkie, and Miley the Schnauzer

Survivors include her daughter and caregiver, Beverly Hurt of Monrovia; son, Steve Davis (Sheryll) of Martinsville; daughter, Nancy Grothkob of Mooresville; sisters, Geneva Clark of Puyallup, Washington and Naomi Baker of Mooresville; grandchildren, Josh Davis of Monrovia, Johnny Lawson of Kansas, Shelley Garman (Tom) of Indianapolis; Alan Hurt (Joni) of Mooresville; Jeremy Hurt (Taleena) of Monrovia and Amber Sims (Terry) of Cloverdale; several great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren, and canine fur baby Bella the beagle.

Per Mary's wishes, the family will be gathering privately for Graveside Services held in South Park Cemetery, Martinsville. Pastor Randy Weddle will officiate services and she will be laid to rest aside her late husband, Raymond "Cat" Stevens.

Memorial contributions may be made to a local charity of the donor’s choice.
