Born in Illinois. Originally served in the 28th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Was transferred on February 15, 1864 to the 6th US Colored Heavy Artillery and promoted to Orderly Sergeant.

He was killed in action near Vidalia, Louisiana on July 22, 1864 at the age of 23.
