Elenor's parents, William and Mary Durant, & her older brother James, immigrated from England in about 1832. Elenor, her older sister Mary Ann, and her younger brothers William, & Robert, were born in New York. There, they attended school, & worked on the family farm. In about 1855, the family went west, to the new lands opening up in Wisconsin.

Elenor spent some time on the family farm there, near Cataract, Monroe County, WI. She eventually met and married George Lyman, a railroad conductor. They lived out their lives in Chicago, & only a few blocks away, from where her brother William, had settled down. Elenor & George did not have children.
