James Durant was born in England about 1832, and immigrated with his parents, when he was a baby. He grew up in New York, where he and his younger siblings, Mary Ann, Elenor, William & Robert, attended school & worked on the family farm. He moved with the family to Wisconsin in about 1855, and continued working on the pioneer family farm near Cataract, in Monroe County, WI.

Here, James applied for his naturalization, and subsequently, he acquired his own farm in Little Falls, very near to where his parents had settled. He married to widower Delilah Telyea. The family included her children, Charles Abner, George Henry, & Viola Ann Telyea. James & "Delia's" children were William, James Eber, & Nellie Durant.
