HALE - A Sad Case - News of a sad case comes from Willisburg. On Saturday Prof. Hedger Hale died of influenza and on Monday his wife passed away, leaving two small children very ill with the same disease. Mr. Hale, who is a nephew of County Attorney R.L. Black, was a prominent educator in Washington county and was highly regarded by every one who knew him. His valued services will be greatly missed in his community. Prof. Hale was a grandson of Mr. James Black, of the West End, and has numerous relatives in this county. (Published in The Harrodsburg Herald, Harrodsburg Ky., Friday, October 25, 1918)

Note - While the obituary above indicates that Hedger's wife Bettie Mitchell died a few days after him, this does not appear to have been the case. She is shown as living with her two daughters in Washington Co. Ky. 1920 and she didn't die until 1964.
