We were in the area of Pope Chapel Cemetery and decided to stop. We found this original rock tombstone laying by her gravesite. Apparently the workers that had been cleaning off an area on the north west corner of the cemetery, that was fenced and over grown with weeds, found the tombstone. Someone had replaced the rock tombstone and apparently threw the original over the fence into the weeds. According to this she was born February 7, 1883 and died January 1, 1923.
According to the 1900 Census, Mattie was born February 1883.
According to the marriage license she was 18, which would have made her born 1883.
My dad was four years old when she died which would make her born 1883. He said that he remembers them backing a wagon up to the door and the family taking her to the cemetery.
