Ella Helen Roberts was orphaned at the age of 5 when both of her parents were killed by lightning. She was taken in and raised by the family of Charles & Mary [Snyder] Rowe.

She was married to Alonzo "Lon" Perry on March 11, 1894 in Harrison County, Indiana, and they had two sons, William Stanley Perry (1896-1958), and Claude Perry (1898-1953). Lon died of tuberculosis when the children were small, about 1900.
On April 21, 1909, she married Alexander Richard McRae in Harrison County, Indiana, and moved to the 160 acre farm he owned about two and one-half miles southeast of New Middleton.
Alexander had four children from his first marriage, and with Ella he had three daughters, Sylvia Francis [McRae] Skinkle (1910-1996), Effie Maude [McRae] Barger (1911-1991), and Rowena May [McRae] Swank (1915-1992).

After the death of her husband in 1933, Ella moved to Otterbein in Benton County to live with the family of her son William, who had migrated there earlier.
