Clement was born at the Church of England vicarage in Omeo on 28 April 1891 where his father was the parish minister and came from "fighting stock". One uncle had fought in the 1901 Boxer Rebellion in China and another was decorated for services in the Boer War. Altogether there were 28 members of the extended Lane family serving in the armed and naval services in WW1.
Before the war Lane held a commission in the Citizen Forces while he clerked at Steel Brothers who were tea merchants in Melbourne. He enlisted on 24 August and was quickly commissioned to Lieutenant with the 6th Battalion and sailed with other East Gippslanders on the Hororata on 19 October 1914. He was killed in action at the landing on 25 April and like many others has no known grave but memorialised at Lone Pine on the wall of remembrance. His brothers George and Tremayne both survived to return to Australia in 1919. EGHS
