William "Bill" Ernest Hazen was the son of James Walter Hazen and Beulah Mae Patterson. Bill was born and raised in Ponca City, Kay, Oklahoma where he attended the Ponca City Junior High and High Schools.

Bill joioned the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and worked on community road and bridge projects in Oklahoma before entering the Navy. Bill had 10 brothers and sisters.

On 10 Jun 1940 at the age of 18 Bill went to Enid, Oklahoma and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served in the Asiatic with the U.S. Fleet during WW II for two years.

Bill participated in the Battle of the Java Sea and was reported missing on 1 Mar 1942 in the line of duty (although officially his date of death was reported as 1 Nov 1945). He was later awarded the Purple Heart Medal which was given to his mother. Bill was not married.

On 27 June 1946 Bill's parents received an letter from the Bureau of Naval Personnel in Washington, D.C. awarding him the Purple Heart. The letter was signed by Lt. Cmdr. Joe Floyd, USNR, Officer in Charge, Medals and Awards Section, Enlisted Performance Division.
