B-24J #42-73449 was on a mission from Darwin, Australia to photograph shipping at Manokwari, Dutch West Indies (West Papua, Indonesia). Forty minutes after leaving the target area, planes broke formation to enter a weather front, at about 14:00 hours.
B-24J #42-73449 was not seen or heard from again. A search box from Bentoni Bay in the west to Mois Waar to the east and southward on the aircraft's path back to Darwin was conducted. The missing craft was never located. It is unknown if it went down over land or into a bay.
Peter was awarded the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.
