Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until July 11, 1944.

Donald served as a Staff Sergeant & Gunner on B-24D "Heaven Can Wait" #42-41216, 320th Bomber Squadron, 90th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Somerset County, New Jersey prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on October 7, 1942 in Newark, New Jersey. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a mechanic and also as Single, without dependents.

B-24D #42-41216 took off, with a crew of 11 and 5 other B-24's, from Nadzab Airfield, Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea on a bombing mission over Boram Airfield, East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea area.

After bombing the area, and while starting to return to base, B-24D #42-41216 was hit by intense anti-aircraft fire over Awar Point and are believed to have crashed into the Hansa Bay. The entire crew was lost on this mission.

Donald was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
