LTjg Edmundo Gandia, a 1938 graduate of the US Naval Academy, was declared MIA when enemy forces sunk the USS Pillsbury on March 2, 1942, 200 miles east of Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean. In the Naval Academy's yearbook, Gandia is described as a man of few words who was good at sailing, boxing, and swimming, and had a "knack of making life pleasant for his classmates."
