He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on January 2, 1942 at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a stationary engineer and also as Single, without dependents.
Oliver was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-17E, while on a mission, was attacked by Japanese zeros and crashed in East New Britain, Papua New Guinea during the war.
He was awarded the Purple Heart.
The day of the crash the four surviving member of the crash (Naumann, Cascio, Green and Fox) found the remains of Lewis, Alvin, DeVoss, Bukalski and Smith.
However his remains were not found by later recovery operations and he is still missing.

Oliver also has a "Cenotaph" in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, North Branch, Minnesota.
