Alvan served as a Technical Sergeant and Radio Operator on B-17E "Craps For The Japs" (#41-2653), 65th Bomber Squadron, 43rd Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
He resided in Manatee County, Florida prior to the war.
He enlisted in the Army on February 21, 1941, prior to the war, in Jacksonville, Florida. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Sales Clerk and also as being Single, without dependents.
Alvan was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-17 did not return on a bombing mission to Cape Gloucester Airfield (Tuluvu) during the war. A group of twelve B-17 were on this mission and they were intercepted by Japanese Fighters and it is believed that his B-17 was shot down by them and crashed into the sea. He and was awarded an Air Medal and a Purple Heart.
