Howard, having gone missing on the above date, was not officially declared as being dead by the military until January 14, 1946.
Howard served as a Second Lieutenant and Co-Pilot on B-17E "Craps For The Japs" (#41-2653), 65th Bomber Squadron, 43rd Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
He resided in Lucas County, Ohio prior to the war.
Howard was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-17 did not return on a bombing mission to Cape Gloucester Airfield (Tuluvu) during the war. A group of twelve B-17 were on this mission and they were intercepted by Japanese Fighters and it is believed that his B-17 was shot down by them and crashed into the sea.
He and was awarded an Air Medal and a Purple Heart.
