William Akins Sr. was born in 1756 in Cecil Co., Maryland. He moved with his family to Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina, where his father James Akins purchased 202 acres of land in the Steel Creek area in 1777. William enlisted as a soldier in the North Carolina State Troops in 1777 and fought in the Revolutionary War, attaining the rank of First Lieutenant. On 4 March, 1784, in Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina, he married Elizabeth McCorkle, the daughter of Stephen and Anne (Forbes) McCorkle, and they settled in the area of Rock Hill, York Co., South Carolina, where they lived for nearly 30 years.

William Akins was a pioneer settler in early Alabama. He is listed on the 1820 census for St. Clair County, as was his brother-in-law William McCorkle. William Akins, his wife, and their children later moved to Morgan Co., Georgia, where they resided until 1839 when they returned to Alabama, settling in Spring Garden in Cherokee County, where he died on 29 March, 1841 at 85 years of age.
