James' brother, William Akins, a first lieutenant in the Revolutionary War stated in his application for a veteran's pension that he was born in Cecil Co., Maryland in 1756.
He married Frances _______ on 16 March, 1791, in Greene Co., Georgia. They had two children: William, born 16 April, 1793, and Joseph, who was born in 1795 in Greene Co., Georgia.
