Revolutionary War Veteran, served as a private in Lock's N.C. Militia.


Place of birth was "on the line between Maryland & Pennsylvania; my father having moved to Macklinburg [sic] Co., N.C. when I was so small that I do not myself recollect what state we lived in, and I do not recollect that I ever heard him say". (statement made by James Akens in his Revolutionary War veterans pension application)


James' brother, William Akins, a first lieutenant in the Revolutionary War stated in his application for a veteran's pension that he was born in Cecil Co., Maryland in 1756.


He married Frances _______ on 16 March, 1791, in Greene Co., Georgia. They had two children: William, born 16 April, 1793, and Joseph, who was born in 1795 in Greene Co., Georgia.
