Killed by friendly fire when the ship he was on was accidentally torpedoed by an American Submarine. He and about 1000 other POW's had just been released from a prison camp after being held captive (from 1942 - 1944) when their ship was sunk.
Chalmer was awarded the Purple Heart for Military Merit and Wounds received in action.
