On the 14th of November, 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt announced that "The Government of the United States has decided to withdraw the American Marine detachments now maintained ashore in China..." Clouds of war were quickly closing in on the China Marines as Japan and the United States edged ever closer to active hostilities.

In November 1941, the Fourth Marines were pulled out of China and sent to the Philippines, where they were to prepare the islands for defense against a Japanese invasion. On 08 December 1941 war with Japan broke out. Japanese forces began a full-scale invasion of Luzon on 22 December.

Sergeant Edward V. Foresman, RTruckmaster, (QM-Mech). His ordinary duties were with the garrison's motor transport section, but by May 1942 manned a defensive post as well.

On 09 April 1942, Filipino and U.S. forces on Bataan were surrendered and the Japanese were able to mass artillery for an all-out attack of the Rock from just 2 miles away.

On the night of 5-6 May 1942, Japanese forces landed on the island and overwhelmed the garrison, which surrendered at 1200 hours the following day. Sergeant Foresman was among those killed in the attack. His body was seen after the battle, but his burial site was not reported and his remains have not been recovered.

Sergeant Foresman was initially listed as missing in action. It wasn't until some affidavits of his death were given by fellow Marines while they were in Cabanatuan Prison in July 1943 that he was officially listed as killed in action on 06 May 1942.

Field Cook Alvie McDaniel, USMC (S/N 290051), swore on 26 July 1943, "that he saw the dead bodies of the following men who were killed in action on 06 May 1942 on Corregidor Island, P.I.: Frederick F. Bair, Jr., PhM3c, USN; Edward V. Foresman, Sgt, 4th Regt, USMC; John E. Haskin, QM Sgt. 4th Regt, USMC."
