1st Lt Murphy was a pilot with the 5th Air Force, 6th Photo Reconnaissance Group, 8th Photo Reconnaissance Squadron. On June 26 1943 he took off from Schwimmer Airdrome near Port Moresby Papua New Guinea in F-4 #41-2137 (a recon version of the P-38 Lightning) on a photo recon mission to Rabaul, New Britain. He did not reach his destination, and it is believed that he may have been shot down by Japanese fighter planes.
He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
