Bernard served as a Technical Sergeant on B-24D #41-24017, 400th Bomber Squadron, 90th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in New York prior to the war.

Bernard was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-24, which took off from 5-Mile (Ward) near Port Moresby on an armed reconnaissance mission over Wewak, was believed to have failed to turn a proper course back to base and was lost at sea during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
