He enlisted in the Army on September 1, 1942 in Rochester, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Semiskilled cranemen, derrickmen, hoistmen, and/or shovelmen and also as being Single, without dependents.
Robert was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-17 did not return on a bombing mission to Cape Gloucester Airfield (Tuluvu) during the war.
A group of twelve B-17 were on this mission and they were intercepted by Japanese Fighters and it is believed that his B-17 was shot down by them and crashed into the sea.
He and was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
