Donald was the son of Ralph & Cecile Phelps (nee Pulver). They had thirteen children and were farmers living in Rives Junction in Michigan, USA.

In 1943 Don joined a mechanised Cavalry Unit, the 2nd Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron serving in General Patton's 3rd Army. The unit moved so daringly and quickly scouting the way forward in enemy territory that they became known as the "Ghosts of Paton's Army).
Don was wounded in action but returned to duty. He was again wounded whilst scouting in the Rennes-Nantes Corridor and was captured by the Germans. As a POW, Don was part of a wounded prisoner exchange but he sadly died of his injuries.
In all six brothers went off to war but only three came home.
Donald is buried next to his brother Ted. His brother Bob is listed as missing at the north Africa American Cemetery.
