Walter K. Higgins was the pilot of a B-17g that exploded in mid air on its way to a bombing destination about 20 miles from Berlin, Germany. He maintained control of what was left of aircraft and ordered his crew to bail out. He remained with the aircraft until it hit the ground. The Germans reported finding his dog tags in wreckage.
