Second Lieutenant John "Jackson" Howard Wheeler, born 3 Feb 1921, was the son of Ernest J and Irene (Kenyon) Wheeler of Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts.
In the 1930 census 9-year-old John is living with his parents and siblings Ernest Jr. 15, and George 12, at 160 Buckingham Street in Springfield. His father is a bank vice president.In the 1940 census 19-year-old John is living with his parents and brother George 22, still at 160 Buckingham in Springfield. His father is now president of Springfield National Bank. Brother George is an insurance clerk for Springfield Fire and Marine Insurance.On his 1940 draft registration John is a student at Babson Institute (now Babson College) in Wellesley, Massachusetts. John wanted to be a CPA and in financial management.On 3 Jul 1944 the 358th Fighter Group, flying P-47 Thunderbolts, moved from High Halden, England to Cretteville, France. Cretteville is in Normandy 6 miles southwest of Saint Mer Eglise.The NARA WWII casualty listings by state and county for Massachusetts show Wheeler, John H from Hampden County as DOW (Died of Wounds). Lt Wheeler died as a prisoner of war under German control.
