Initially in command of a Reconnaissance Battalion during the 1942 North Africa campaign. For the Normandy invasion Nelson was reassigned to the 67th Armored Regiment.
After landing on Omaha Beach on June 9, 1944, his battalion of 67th Armored Regiment, 2nd Armored Division supported Allied forces in the Normandy bocage country. Colonel nelson"s battalion was conducting maneuvers southwest of Saint Lô, France, his tank took a direct hit from a German artillery shell fatally wounding him July 28, 1944.
