He served in the Union Army, and during the battle of Murphreesboro, he contracted 'rheumatism', which eventually left this tough young carpenter with crippled hands. Also having to sleep by the cannons during the battle damaged his hearing, so eventually he was nearly deaf. His wife abandoned him about 1898, running off with another man, though they were never divorced. Folks helped him get his pension, and eventually moved into the old soldiers home in Tennessee, where he later died.
