He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on March 26, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Clerk and also as Single, without dependents.

Robert was "Killed In Action" when his B-26 was hit by enemy flak and crashed in France during the war. He was awarded the Air Medal with 11 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.
