Melvin was a member of the Saddle Mountain Round-up Club and the Cowboys Association of America. He enlisted on November 14, 1942 while in New Mexico and went overseas on May 5, 1943. As a member of the 39th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, Melvin fought in Africa, Sicily, Italy, and Normandy, where he was killed in action at Cherbourg. He earned the Good Conduct Medal and the Expert Rifleman Medal, as well as a Presidential Unit Citation, the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, four Battle Participation Stars and the American Defense Ribbon.
