Burlington, North Carolina Daily Times News, December 5, 1944: The Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry in action has been posthumously awarded to Gunner's Mate 2C Milton P. Weatherford, USNR, Salisbury, N.C., the Navy Department announced today.
He was killed on D-Day on the coast of France by German artillery. He was a member of a naval combat demolition team and had landed on the beach at the appointed moment. He was killed while attempting to blow a 50 yard gap in enemy emplacement obstacles.
His citation says: "his unfaltering devotion to duty in the performance of an extremely hazardous mission was in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country." He was born in Spencer, N.C. His wife is Mrs. Catherine Bass Weatherford, of 915 Ellis St., Salisbury.
