Son of John Rankin Summers (1894–1957) & Lillie Mae Hedrick Summers (1897–1976).

James served as a Private First Class, 351st Infantry Regiment, 88th Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Guilford County, North Carolina prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on August 7, 1943 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was noted as being Single, without dependents.

James was "Killed In Action" during the war and was awarded the "Bronze Star" and the Purple Heart.
