Birth.
Matthew Halligan, son of Michael Halligan and Mary Halligan, formerly Murphy, was born on 8 May 1881, at Naas, Co. Kildare.
His father was a Labourer.
He became a pupil at The Royal Hibernian Military School, Phoenix Park, Dublin.
He enlisted in The Royal Dublin Fusiliers in October 1899.
After service in South Africa, he was later a Colour Serjeant .
Marriage.
The marriage of Matthew Halligan and Florence A. Reilly was registered in Farnham district [Aldershot] in the quarter ended December 1911.
A daughter, Florence C.M. Halligan was born in late 1912. She married George Norris in 1937 in Aldershot.
Florence A. Halligan died in Willesden district, London, in 1958, aged 65.
At the start of WW1, Matthew was promoted to Regimental Quartermaster Serjeant.
He was commissioned a Lieutenant on 21 May 1915 (London Gazette 20 May 1915), and posted to a Service Battalion for training
He transferred to the Royal Flying Corps and was appointed Flying Officer (Lieutenant) on 20 December 1916 (London Gazette 22 Jan. 1917).
Whilst serving with No. 1. Aeroplane Supply Depot, in France, he was killed whilst flying on 18 November 1917, near Amiens.
It is uncertain as to whether his plane was hit, or failed due to mechanical issues.
