David Sherwood Nye, Jr. (Jimmie) age 83, peacefully passed away Friday, August 6, 2010 surrounded by his loving family and friends. The son of the late David Sherwood Nye, Sr. and Alice Anne Louise McMillan Nye, Jimmie was born in Mullins, SC on April 22, 1927. Jimmie graduated from Conway High School in 1943, attended the University of SC, and served in the United States Navy. "Dr. Jimmie" was longtime owner and operator of Nye's Pharmacy. In 1928, Jimmie's father, Sherwood Nye, and his uncle Bruce Nye came to Conway and opened Nye's Pharmacy

A faithful lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Conway, he enjoyed the Angler Sunday School Class and Baptist Men. Jimmie was compassionate, generous, and kind in helping those in their time of need both professionally and personally, influencing all in a positive manner. Mentor to all who worked at Nye's pharmacy, he gave many young people their first job opportunity and was a friend to all Conway teenagers who frequented Nye's to "hang out." Jimmie, affectionately called "Pop" by his family, was a true Southern gentlemen, wonderful husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, companion, and friend. He enjoyed boating, fishing, woodworking, gardening, and people. Passionate about Murrell's Inlet, the Waccamaw River and Smith Lake, he often reminisced fondly of enjoying house parties at Nyoka, rowing his boat from Conway to Cox's Ferry Lake, swimming with the boys at Tarzan's Cabin in Smith Lake, and roller skating all over Conway, even skating on a frozen Smith Lake one winter. His Murrells's Inlet home, Nyoka was always open for his friends and family to visit and fellowship. Dr. Jimmie will always be remembered for touching the lives of customers and friends through his generosity.

Jimmie loved his coffee club and enjoyed spending time at Donzelle's and Pulley Bones. A charter member of the Conway Wellness and Fitness Center, he enjoyed exercising, socializing with his water aerobic buddies, and meeting new friends. An honorary member of the Conway High School class of 1944, he rekindled and enjoyed old friendships as they met monthly "class reunions."

Jimmie was predeceased by his wife of forty-two years, Mary Joyce Hosse Nye. He is survived by his longtime companion Janet Parker Gochenour of Conway. Surviving are his loving children, daughter Ruth Anne Nye Sanford and husband Jeffrey Ray Sanford of Sumter; his son David Sherwood Nye, III, and wife Phyllis Johnson Nye of Conway; and daughter Mary Elizabeth "Beth" Nye Zirkle and husband Thomas Bruce Zirkle of Myrtle Beach. His devoted grandchildren are Elizabeth Nye Bradford, Matthew James Bradford, Anna Louise Sanford, David Sherwood Nye, IV, Richard Edward Bailey, Jr., and Camilla Johnson Nye. Surviving are sister Mary Louise Nye Holley of Aiken; brother Francis Leonard Nye of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; and special cousin, Mary Katherine Nye Keith of Gastonia, NC.

The family would like to extend gratitude and appreciation to all of the staff of Kingston Nursing Center and Mercy Hospice for their love, kindness, and care; and to all friends who called, visited, and prayed for our family during Jimmie's illness.

Please make memorials to Growing Strong at First Baptist Church, 603 Elm Street, Conway, SC 29526, or Mercy Hospice, 8216 Devon Court, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.
