James was born Jacobus and was called that until about 1880. In the censuses for 1860 and 1870 he was Jacobus and in 1880 he was James and he remained James the rest of his life.

James was the 4th of eight children born to Gradus and Marie "Mary" (Breen) Vriezelaar.

James was married in 1884 to Miss Mattie DeReus, a daughter of Arie DeReus, a resident of Pella, Iowa. To this union eight children living and have lost two. Their names: Gradus J.; Ira G.; William A.; Maggie; Mamie & Henry (twins); Jimmie; Martha, the last named bing now 16 yers old. Henry, the first of that name died 23 Aug 1890 and the age of 10 m and 23 days, while another child named Mimie died 18 Nov 1892 at the age of five.
The family attend the Baptist church and can be depended upon to further in any way possible the moral advancement of the community.
