Celia Lovingood was the youngest of three daughters born to Robert Lovingood and his second wife, Sarah "Sallie" Gentry. Her maternal grandfather, William S. Gentry, and her uncles, John N. and Stephen M. Gentry were all killed on the same day, September 11, 1864, by Rebel soldiers. Her father, Robert Lovingood, was also killed by Rebels, on October 21, 1864, after his discharge from the Union Army. Celia was born 6 months and 12 days after her father's death. Celia and her sisters were raised by their mother Sallie, and her second husband, Miles Sneed, whom Sallie married in 1873.
