"MAJOR MONTEITH KILLED IN ACTION".

"It was with a great shock and profound sense of sorrow that the public of Carstairs and neighbourhood learned that Major Henry Monteith, J.P., D.L., of Cranley, had been killed in action at the Dardanelles on December 27th. Throughout Wednesday last the sorrowful tidings was the sole topic of conversation, and deep and general gloom pervaded the entire district.

Major Henry Monteith, of Cranley, Carstairs (1st Battalion Lanarkshire Yeomanry), was born on August 10th, 1870, and succeeded his father in the estate in October, 1911. He was the eldest son of the late Joseph Monteith, Deputy-Lieutenant of Lanarkshire, by his marriage with Florence Catherine Mary, sister of Sir Ivor Herbert, Bart., M.P., Monmouth, and of the Hon. Mrs. Walter Maxwell, and grand-daughter of the late Lord Llauover. His brother, Captain Geo. Monteith, 2nd Gordon Highlanders, was killed in action at Loos on September 25th.

The Monteiths originally came from Aberfoyle, where they owned an estate. The proprietor, who was contemporary with Rob Roy, having refused to pay blackmail to that celebrated freebooter, found himself ultimately, by repeated raids on his property, compelled to abandon it, and finally settled near Glasgow. His grandson, James Monteith, made a fortune in the cotton trade, and was the father of Henry Monteith, Lord Provost of Glasgow and M.P. for Lanark, who purchased the Carstairs estate early in the last century, and married a Cameron of Lochiel.

Major Monteith, who was unmarried, is survived by five brothers, two of whom are on active service. He was a cousin of General Sir Ian Hamilton, whose full is lan Standish Monteith Hamilton. Monteith, who was greatly esteemed throughout the Upper Ward, was an ideal landlord, in this respect following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, who were among the most popular Lanarkshire lairds of their time.

The deceased officer was highly popular with the men of his regiment as well as his fellow-officers, and general regret is felt at the tragic, though glorious, close of a promising career."

Born at Carstairs, Lanarkshire, he was the 39 year-old of the late Joseph Francis and Florence Catherine Mary Monteith; brother of Monica Monteith, of Ladies' Park Club, 32 Knightsbridge, London. He is buried in Pink Farm Cemetery, Cape Helles.
