In 1930 he and his parents and three siblings lived in a place they were renting for four dollars a month on Needmore and Oolitic Road in Marshall Township, Lawrence County, IN. They did not have a radio. His father worked as a laborer at a lime kiln.

In 1940 he and his parents and three siblings--but not the same three as in 1930--lived in a house they were renting for four dollars a month in Needmore, Marshall Township--possibly the same house. His father worked as a laborer for the WPA, doing road ditching, with an income in 1939 of $384 for 32 weeks of work.

He was serving as the radio operator on a B-17G which took off from Chelveston with an assigned target of La Glacerie, France. Spun down and crashed due to flak. Crashed at 1830 hrs at 'Signal de Sompuis', three miles east of Poivres, six miles east of Mailly-le-Camp, 19 miles south of Chalons-sur-Marne. Most of the survivors were blown out when the aircraft exploded. 6 KIA 4 POW
