2nd Lt Charles S. Faxon Jr. attended 2 years of college and was a salesperson before he volunteered for the US Army in Fort Thomas Newport, Kentucky on 13 January 1942.

1st Lt Howard R. Meckstroth:

"A few seconds before bombs-away, I saw Lt Faxon drop his bombs and turn sharply to the left. After our box had dropped its bombs and had rallied to the left Lt Faxon’s ship was observed by me out at nine o’clock, that is, off our left wing. I then noticed Lt Faxon pulling over the top of our box and moving out to our right. A minute or so later, he again came over the top of our box and moved out to our left. The plane appeared to be under control all this time although smoke could be seen coming from his number three engine and bomb bay this being due to a hit by flak. When last seen by me, aircraft #668 was still flying straight and level headed southwardly."

Sgt Charles H. Mitchell:
"Orders were given the crew to bail out and all parachuted with the exception of the pilot."

He did not have time to bail out he was trapped by fire in the pilots compartment and flight deck of the ship. His remains were never recovered.
