He resided in Coos County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on November 12, 1942 in Manchester, New Hampshire. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in a Semiprofessional occupation Single, with dependents.

Joseph was declared "Missing In Action" during the war.

He was awarded the "Silver Star" and the Purple Heart with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster.
