Information below gleaned from book "Spitfires & Yellow Tail Mustangs: The U.S. 52nd Fighter Group in WWII:
On 2 June, 1st Lt. Thompson D. Litchfield, 5th FS, damaged a Ju 88 over the Bay of Bizerte. Lt. Sid Feld shot down an Fw 190 on 3 June, twenty miles northeast of Cape Bon, and three days later Feld downed an Me 109 west of Pantelleria and damaged another in the same area, for his final victories. With nine kills, Sylvan Feld was the USAAF's highest scoring Spitfire ace. Soon afterward, he was transferred out of the group, and in September 1943 Feld was reassigned to the 410th FS, 373rd FG. The 373rd was later deployed to the Ninth Air Force in England, and during his short combat tour with this group, Maj. Feld destroyed 3.5 German aircraft on the ground. On 13 August 1944, Feld's P-47 was brought down by flak and seven days later, as a POW, he was mortally wounded during a USAAF bombing attack and died the next day in Petit Quevilly, France. Maj. Feld was buried as "an unknown German soldier," and it was not until 1959 that the German War Graves Commission unearthed the remains and found American military clothing and Maj. Feld's dogtags. His remains were re-interred in the Ardennes American Cemetery in Belgium.
