Private First-Class Charles Elliott Cobbey, born in 1918, was the son of Rev. Charles E. and Melba M (Snyder) Cobbey of Lincoln, Nebraska.

In the 1920 census 3-year-old Charles is living with his parents and siblings Amos 9, and Ruth 6, at 1313 S. 30th Street in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska. His father is a Disciples of Christ minister. The family moved to Lincoln in 1922 when Charles’ father was named president of Cotner College. He died 11 Sep 1925 at the age of 40. In the 1930 census 13-year-old Charles is living with his widowed mother as head of household and siblings Amos 19, and Ruth 16, at 6843 Francis Street in Lincoln. His mother is a college teacher. Brother Amos is a vacuum cleaner salesman. In the 1940 census 22-year-old Charles is living with his mother and maternal grandmother at 601 S 55th Street in Lincoln. His mother is a field supervisor for a social work agency. Charles is a “poultry man” for a chicken farm.

The 117th Infantry regiment of the 30th Infantry Division was engaged on the high ground west of Saint Lo on the day Pfc Cobbey went missing in action (later confirmed killed in action).

Cobbey is reported missing in action in France in mid-July, according to a telegram from the war department received by his mother, Mrs. Mabel Cobbey of Cotner Boulevard, Lincoln. He is a nephew of Mrs. J. Stewart Elliott of Beatrice, and a son of the late Rev. Charles E. Cobbey, formerly of Beatrice, who was president of Cotner College, Lincoln, in 1925. Pfc. Charles Cobbey was not a member of Co. C from Beatrice. Additional details are expected.

They are: European theater: Pfc Charles E. Cobbey, son of Mrs. Mabel S. Cobbey, 2603 N Cotner blvd., Lincoln.

Cobbey, 27, previously reported as missing in action, was killed in France July 16, 1944, the war department informed his mother Friday. He was the son of Mrs. Mabel Cobbey 2603 No. Cotner, and the late Rev. Charles E Cobbey, former president of Cotner College. The government telegram stated that “corrected reports” listed Private Cobbey as killed in action, and expressed regret at the lapse in time since he was reported missing in August. Private Cobbey graduated from Bethany high school and attended the college of agriculture at the University of Nebraska. He joined the army more than three years ago.
