Private William Christian King, born 30 Dec 1893, was the son of Calvin Luther King and Mary Susan "Mollie" (Mercer) King of Frederick, Frederick County, Maryland.

On March 13 the 2nd division, less artillery, was assigned to the French X Corps, French Second Army, for front-line training. On the same day the division began to move to the vicinity of Sommedieue in the area of that army southeast of Verdun. From March 17 to 30 elements of the 2d Division, affiliated with the French 33d, 34th and 52d Divisions, participated in the occupation of the respective divisional sectors of Toulon, Rupt and Troyon, on the west face of the St. Mihiel salient. On March 21 the artillery brigade joined. The French 34th Division was withdrawn on the 30th, and the Rupt Sector divided between the Toulon and Troyon Sectors. The 2d Division continued its participation in the occupation of these two sectors until May 13,

Awarded the Purple Heart Medal for actions against the enemy.

KIA while serving as an Rifleman with Co L. during an enemy (Stoßtruppen) attack upon his Co's. position while in Center of Resistance "Marie-Louise", just east of the French town of Maizey, France during The Defensive Sector (Verdun-Troyon) on the morning of April 8th, 1918.

Upon Pvt. King's death, Pvt. King was initially interred at Grave #5, Temporary American Cemetery, Rouvrois-sur-Meuse, France on the morning of Monday, April 8th, 1918, and was finally re-interred at Grave #7, Row #13, Section B. at St. Mihiel American Cemetery, Thiaucourt-Regniéville, France on the afternoon of Thursday, August 17th, 1922.
