The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Hersel R. Adams (ASN: 0-283874), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action against a hostile force. Captain Adams distinguished himself by intrepid actions in September 1943 while serving with the 141st Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division. His unquestionable valor in close combat is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 36th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

On his Oct 1940 draft registration Hersel is working for the US Immigration Service in Edinburg (Rio Grande Valley) Texas.
Hersel was in the Texas National Guard during the 1930s. On 25 Nov 1940 his unit was federalized, and he was promoted to 2nd Lt. He was promoted to 1st Lt on 15 Jul 1941, and Capt 22 Apr 1942.
Hersel married Pearl Alzada Lewis sometime in 1942.
On 9 Sep 1943 the 141st IR of the 36th ID landed at Paestum, south of Salerno.
The NARA WWII casualty listings by state and county for New York show Adams, Hersel R, Capt from Wyoming County as killed in action 9 Sep 1944. Capt. Adams was killed in an infantry charge on a tank formation. From History.army.mil: "On the left flank, Capt. Hersel R. Adams, Operations Officer of the 3rd Battalion, led a group of Company K men in an infantry charge against oncoming vehicles. Capt. Adams was wounded but he urged his men to leave him beside a nearby canal and continue the fight. Their steady resistance broke up the tank formation for a time. Later when the tanks reformed and came back, Capt. Adams was exposed to their fire and killed." Hersel was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his extraordinary heroism against a hostile force on 9 Sep 1943.
Pearl remarried Chester Wayne Jones 16 Feb 1967 in Van Zandt County, Texas. She passed away 16 Jun 1981 in Mineola, Wood County, Texas.
