Captain Slaughter had just gained a Silver Star for heroism in combat at the sugar refinery in Ameln, Germany, on February 26, 1945. A US Army historian interviewed him about this exploit. Captain Slaughter would have less than one month to live.

Until a few days before his death he was Commander of B-Cie/115th Rgt/29th Div. On March 17, he was seconded to HQ 9th Army.

Chester C. Slaughter attended 4 years of high school, worked as a cook and was married.
He entered the service (National Guard) from Mexia, Texas on 25 November 1940 as a Private with ASN 20807665 and was commissioned at Fort Benning, Georgia after completing officer candidate school. Prior to that he had been stationed at Camp Wolters, where he was in command of a rifle company and at Camp Maxey, Texas. He was last home in August, 1944. He was a 1939 graduate of Mexia high school.His wife is the former Colleen Patton and he is the son of Mrs. Leonard McCoslin.
