T/Sgt Stephens was the flight engineer on B-24D #41-23818, assigned to the 8th Air Force, 44th Bombardment Group, 67th Bombardment Squadron. They were flying from Shipdham England on a bombing mission against St. Nazaire France. Very soon after leaving the English coast, Another plane in the formation, B-24D #40-2354, had some kind of trouble maintaining position in the formation and collided with Stephens's. Both planes burst into flames, exploded and plunged into the English Channel. Four parachutes were seen by other air crews, but rescue boats were unable to locate any of the men from either plane.
He received the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
Because his body was not recovered, his name is inscribed on the Tablets of the Missing.
