Dale was killed with the three other aircrew when their C47 transport and paratroop aircraft crashed near Guildford, Surrey, England.

Setting out in very poor weather and under a low cloud base they needed to climb to fly over some approaching hills. While doing this the aircraft stalled and or the load shifted and the aircraft crashed onto it's back instantly killing all four crew men. The aircraft then caught fire. All the men had taken part in airborne operations to drop paratroops and tow gliders as part of D-Day, the invasion of the south of France and Operation Market Garden to land troops in Holland
